NLC Rwanda and CNLS Burundi receive Special Achievement in GIS Award (SAG)During this year's UC in San Diego Jack Dangermond honors representatives from East Africa for their exemplary work carried out with GIS
Esri Rwanda is proud to announce, that the Conseil National de Lutte contre le SIDA (C.N.L.S) and the National Land Center of Rwanda (NLC), have won a Special Achievement in GIS Award (SAG). The SAG Awards acknowledge innovative and intelligent application of GIS technology. Thousands of nominations are submitted for the SAG each year. This year some 140 organizations from all around the world including CNLS and NLC were awarded. The winners were announced in July during the 2011 Esri International User Conference in San Diego, USA.
During a festive ceremony the SAGs were received by Liliane Ruvakubusa, representative of the Conseil National de Lutte contre le SIDA in Burundi, and by Dr. Emmanuel Nkurunziza, Director General of Rwanda Natural Resources Authority for the National Land Center of Rwanda.
C.N.L.S. was honored for showing the progress made with their plan of actions against HIV/AIDS and for identifying the remaining challenges in terms of coverage of the HIV/AIDS fight repost using ArcGIS 9.3.1. and Mobile GIS.
The Burundi National Commission against HIV/ AIDS serves as a coordinating body and follows a decentralized and multi-sectorial approach to eradicate the pandemy. C.N.L.S. established a national database where the actions taken all over the country are comprised: prevention, care, minimizing the impact of HIV/ AIDS and coordination. Their GIS project aims to illustrate the actions taken to minimize the expansion of HIV/ AIDS in Burundi.
The National Land Center of Rwanda received special recognition for providing easy access to land titles for each and every Rwandan ensuring tenure security and facilitating the access to credits from financial institutions. So far over 2 million parcels have been registered and captured in GIS while the remaining estimated 6 million parcels of the country shall follow suit. Orthorectified high resolution aerial photography is not only being used for delineating and digitizing the Nations parcels, but also in the National Land Use and Development Master Plan which was just recently approved by Cabinet.
"NLC has, over the past two years, registered tremendous steps in adopting and harnessing the possibilities offered by GIS in developing one of the most progressive national land use master plans as well as facilitating the land registration process that is underway across the country," said Dr. Emmanuel Nkurunziza.
He added that the land use master plan that is developed using GIS spatial analysis will ensure rational and optimal use of land across the country. "Specific district land use plans are in the process of being developed using the same approach. In the land registration program, capture of geo-spatial data such as parcel shapes, dimensions and area is accomplished by the use of GIS," he said.
Esri Rwanda Ltd. wishes to congratulate warmly both the National Land Center of Rwanda and C.N.L.S. Burundi for winning a Special Achievement Award in GIS. It is a great pleasure having clients using Esri software in ways so beneficial for Rwanda and Burundi.
